The Boomerang Alliance is Australia’s leading circular economy NGO focused on eliminating waste and plastic pollution at the source.
We are catalysts for change – collaborating and coordinating campaigns to bring systems change on behalf of 55+ allied environment organisations and 40.000+ supporters. We played a key role in introducing container deposit schemes across Australia and driving the ban and ongoing phase-out of single-use plastics.
Our national Plastic Free Places program works with thousands of businesses and has eliminated millions of single-use plastic items. Our reuse campaign is helping make reusables commonplace.
We operate in all states and, on behalf of our allies and supporters, call for urgent national action on the circular economy, to benefit the community, environment and business.
Our name includes the ‘boomerang‘, chosen for its symbolism of ‘returning’.
We envision a world without waste, where the resources we use will circulate indefinitely — enabling a sustainable economy and the regeneration of our ecosystems.
We are committed to Caring for Country in the spirit of the Indigenous custodians of this land and these waters.
May we all walk gently on this land and protect the waterways that sustain life.
Over the past 20 years, the Boomerang Alliance has grown into the most influential national alliance fighting waste and plastic pollution at the source.
In 2003, a group of passionate people began to campaign for a container deposit system across Australia and decided to create an Alliance amongst a number of environmental groups – from surfers to recyclers, to clean up and neighbourhood groups – to give local communities power and influence in their struggle to stem the massive waste of discarded resources polluting our playgrounds, parks, rivers and beaches.
The Boomerang Alliance quickly grew from 9 groups and now comprises 55+ national, state and local allies. Each of our allies has the right to its own policies and decides on the extent of support it gives to our campaigns.
